The GEL 220/1 linear scale consists of a hard chrome-plated steel rod and an enclosed plastic measuring head. The measuring head is made from Durethan bkv 30h6011.

 Measurement is made through the wall of the casing, using magnetic field sensitive semi-conductors. The steel rod is "rifled" with a 1.6 mm pitch and with internal interpolation electronics a peak-to-peak resolution of 0.4 mm (0.04 mm on GEL 221) is achieved.

With secondary edge-evaluation, a maximum resolution of 0.1 mm (0.01 mm on GEL 221) is possible.

As for the incremental encoders, four signal patterns are available. Included with each unit is also a steel spring plate for easy installation. The spring plate also helps in machine designs to absorb misalignment due to load factors or similar. Designed for use in harsh environments, the GEL 220/1 features IP66 protection.

Three standard lengths - 500, 1000 and 1500 mm are available. Other lengths upon request. The longest possible measuring length is 2540 mm (100 inches). To shorten the rod, simply cut the unmarked end to length. The rod is always 250 mm longer than the measuring length. The marker pulse (index pulse) is marked in one end of the rod.
